k-pop in seoul

Welcome to the Mecca of K-Pop, Seoul

In recent years, thanks to global popularity due to “BTS”, “Blackpink” and “K-pop Demon Hunters”, interest in K-Pop and K-Culture has exploded worldwide.

Naturally, if you’re traveling to Korea, there’s a high chance K-Pop is a big part of what you’re excited to see.

But as a K-Pop fan planning your dream trip, you face a huge challenge: Seoul is massive. Where do you even begin?

To help you, we at Tripplankorea.com have gathered all the must-visit spots for a K-Pop fan. This thematic guide is designed to add incredible cultural richness to your journey and help you build your perfect pilgrimage based on the latest 2025 information.

Let’s dive into the heart of k-pop!

Theme 1. The “Big 4” Headquarters (Paying Homage)

Visiting the agency buildings is a rite of passage. You can’t go inside, but feeling the atmosphere is part of the experience.

HYBE (Yongsan) – The New Powerhouse

Key Artists: BTS, SEVENTEEN, LE SSERAFIM, TOMORROW X TOGETHER

The massive headquarters in Yongsan is a modern fortress, but let’s be clear with a crucial 2025 update:

  • The “HYBE Insight” museum, which was once located inside this building, is permanently closed as of January 2024. Do not visit expecting a museum, store, or public tour.
  • What to See: The pilgrimage to Yongsan is now about seeing the sheer scale of the building itself from the outside. Fans come to feel the energy and take photos with the iconic “HYBE” logo on the building facade.
  • Local Tip: The ‘HYBE Insight’ brand is now used for traveling pop-up exhibitions. Check their official website to see if a special, temporary event (which could be anywhere in Seoul, or even in Japan/USA) happens to coincide with your trip.
  • Make it a Day Trip: The area, Yongsan, is now Seoul’s new cultural hub. After seeing the building, walk to the National Museum of Korea (free admission, stunning collection) or take a short bus ride to Nodeul Island on the Han River for great city views.

SM Entertainment (Seongsu) – The Kwangya Kingdom

Key Artists: NCT, aespa, RIIZE, SHINee, EXO, Red Velvet

SM has moved to the trendy Seongsu neighborhood, and this is their official fan destination.

  • What to See: The “Kwangya Seoul” flagship store in the Acro Seoul Forest building. This is a futuristic merch store and experience space.
  • Crucial Tip: Please note that the old SMTOWN COEX Artium (Museum, Store, & Cafe) is permanently closed. “Kwangya Seoul” in Seongsu is the current and only official flagship store.
  • Make it a Day Trip: Kwangya is located right next to Seoul Forest, a beautiful, massive park. Idols (especially from SM) are known to walk their dogs here. After visiting, explore Seongsu’s “Brooklyn-like” streets, famous for their cool cafes (like Cafe Onion) and pop-up stores.(Check out our guide about Seongsu-dong!)

YG Entertainment (Mapo) – The Futuristic Cube

Key Artists: BLACKPINK, TREASURE, BABYMONSTER, AKMU

Located near Hongdae (Hapjeong Station), the YG building is an architectural marvel on the Han River.

  • What to See: You can’t miss the striking, futuristic new building. Right across the street is the old YG building, which now houses “The SameE”, a fan-space and cafe where you can buy merch.
  • Make it a Day Trip: After YG, explore the Hapjeong-dong Cafe Street. It’s adjacent to Hongdae but much chiller and more artistic.

JYP Entertainment (Gangdong) – The Organic Hub

Key Artists: Stray Kids, TWICE, ITZY, NMIXX

JYP is located in Gangdong-gu, a bit further east, and is known for its fan-friendly cafe.

  • What to See: The building itself, and more importantly, the “Soul Cup” cafe on the first floor. It’s owned by JYP (J.Y. Park is known for his love of organic food) and is open to the public.
  • Make it a Day Trip: JYP is a 10-minute walk from Olympic Park. This is a legendary K-Pop venue, home to the KSPO Dome (where countless iconic concerts are held). Walk around the park and feel the history.

Theme 2. Beyond the “Big 4” (For the Dedicated Fan)

Show your deep K-Pop knowledge by visiting the agencies of other beloved groups.

Cube Entertainment (Seongsu)

Key Artists: (G)I-DLE, BTOB

Also located in the trendy Seongsu district (easy to combine with your SM visit!), Cube has a great public space.

  • What to See: They have an amazing public cafe on the first floor called “CUBEG” (formerly 20 SPACE). It’s a great place to grab a drink, see memorabilia, and maybe (just maybe) spot a trainee.

Starship Entertainment (Gangnam)

Key Artists: IVE, MONSTA X, CRAVITY

Located in the Gangnam (Samseong-dong) area, Starship is in a sleek, modern building.

  • What to See: While there’s no public cafe, it’s a 15-minute taxi ride from K-Star Road, making it a logical stop on a “Gangnam” themed day.

Theme 3. The Heart of Fan Culture (Live the Fandom!)

This is where you move from seeing K-Pop to experiencing it.

Hongdae: The K-Pop Playground

If you only have one afternoon, spend it in Hongdae. This university neighborhood is the energetic center of youth culture.

  • K-Pop Busking: As evening approaches (around 5 PM – 8 PM), head to the “Hongdae Walking Street.” This is where you’ll find dance crews covering your favorite choreographies. The talent and passion are incredible.
  • Album Shopping: Hongdae has amazing record stores like With Muu and M2U Record. This is the place to buy albums (which count towards the charts) and official merch.
  • Photo Booths: You must take photos at a “Life Four Cuts” (인생네컷) photo booth, which often have special K-Pop artist frames.

Ktown4u (COEX): The All-in-One K-Pop Hub

Located in the massive COEX complex (Gangnam), Ktown4u isn’t just a store; it’s a K-Pop cultural complex and a must-visit destination.

  • Massive Store: This is one of the world’s largest K-Pop stores. You can find almost any album , official merchandise, and lightsticks.
  • Cafe & Lounge: They have a cafe and rest area, often decorated for artist comebacks or events.
  • Experience & Academy: This is what makes it special. Ktown4u hosts fan sign events, pop-up stores, and has an academy space.
  • Local Tip (2025 Update): Before you go, check their official website or social media (check the link above, Twitter/Instagram). They often schedule special events, pop-ups, or even K-Pop dance workshops for foreigners.
  • How to Get There & Photo Op: Take Subway Line 2 to Samseong Station and follow the signs for COEX. It’s outside the mall, near the Starfield Library. Look for Artium which has starbucks reserve store in the building.
  • [MUST-DO PHOTO OP] When you visit, don’t miss the giant ‘Gangnam Style’ hands statue right outside on the COEX East Plaza. It’s a world-famous photo spot and a must-do for your Instagram!

The “Birthday Cafe” (Saeng-il Cafe) Experience

This is the ultimate local fan activity. When an idol has a birthday, fans rent out cafes and decorate them, giving out free fan-made goods (cup holders, photocards) with the purchase of a drink.

  • How to Find Them (Local Tip): This is where you need to do real-time research. Go on Twitter or Instagram and search in Korean: “[Idol Name] + 생일 카페” (e.g., “해린 생일 카페”). Fans will post maps and dates. Most are concentrated in Hongdae and Seongsu.

Theme 4. Walk in Their Footsteps (Iconic Spots & Food)

K-Star Road (Apgujeong)

This is your classic K-Pop photo spot in Gangnam.

  • What to See: Located in Apgujeong, this street is lined with “GangnamDols” (Gangnam + Idol)—large bear statues representing famous groups like TVXQ, SHINee, EXO, and BTS.
  • Local Tip: This area is very high-end (Cheongdam Fashion Street is nearby). It’s fun for photos, but the real fan action is in Hongdae.

“Idol-Certified” Food: Yoojung Sikdang (BTS)

Eating where your idols ate is a special experience.

  • Recommendation: Yoojung Sikdang (유정식당). This is the legendary restaurant that BTS frequented during their rookie days when their practice studio was nearby.
  • The Experience: The restaurant is now a living museum, covered in BTS memorabilia. The food is classic, affordable Korean comfort food (try the Dolsot Bibimbap).

BTS Memory Lane: The Old Big Hit Building

For ARMY, this is a truly special pilgrimage. Before the glass tower in Yongsan, there was a small, humble building in Nonhyeon-dong (Gangnam).

  • What to See: This is the original Big Hit Entertainment office where BTS started. The building itself is non-descript (and now used by other companies), but the entire facade is covered in messages of love and support from fans around the world.
  • How to Go: It’s a short taxi ride from Yoojung Sikdang. Visiting both in one trip is a popular “BTS Memory Lane” half-day tour for fans.

Theme 5. How to Actually See K-Pop Live (The Ultimate Goal)

This is the real “pro-tip” section. You can’t just walk into a music show. Entry is a highly competitive process, and yes, it always requires an application or a pre-booked ticket.

Here’s the breakdown of your options, from “Nearly Impossible” to “Your Best Bet.”

Option 1: The “Official Fan Club” Method (For Pre-Recording)

This is how most Korean fans see their favorites up close. “Pre-recording” is when an artist records their performance early in the morning (like 6 AM) to be aired later.

  • How it Works:
    1. You must be an official, paid member of the group’s fan club (e.g., via Weverse).
    2. During comeback week, the agency will post an application link on the fan cafe or Weverse.
    3. You must apply exactly on time (it’s a lottery or first-come, first-served).
    4. If you win, you must show up at the broadcast station at a very early hour with your ID, official lightstick, and proof of album/music purchase.
  • Verdict for Tourists: Not realistic. This method is designed for domestic fans, requires perfect timing with a group’s comeback, and has too many requirements. Do not plan your trip around this.

Option 2: The “Korean Website Lottery” Method (For Live Audience)

This is for a spot in the actual live broadcast audience. This is also extremely difficult.

  • Inkigayo (SBS): Requires applying for a ticket lottery through the SBS app. This process often requires a Korean phone number or i-PIN (a form of Korean digital ID), making it nearly impossible for most tourists.
  • Music Bank (KBS): Requires applying for a lottery on the official KBS website. You need to create an account, and the lottery is highly competitive.
  • M Countdown (Mnet): This is the only one with a semi-regular “Global Fan” lottery. They sometimes offer tickets via Interpark Global or their own site, but it’s still a lottery and sells out in seconds.
  • Verdict for Tourists: Very difficult and unreliable. You can’t plan a trip based on winning this lottery.

Option 3: The “Paid Tour Package” Method (YOUR BEST AND ONLY REALISTIC OPTION)

This is the answer. This is the real pro-tip.

  • What It Is: Tour companies (like Klook, Trazy, or Viator) have special agreements with some music shows to sell tickets specifically to foreigners.
  • Which Show? It is almost always for SBS The Show (which airs on Tuesdays).
  • How it Works: You pay for a package. It’s that simple. It typically costs between $50 – $100 USD. You book it online, show up at the designated meeting spot, and they guide you in.
  • Local Tip: You must book this at least 1-2 months in advance, especially during peak travel season. These tickets sell out fast. This is the only guaranteed, stress-free way for a tourist to get inside a real K-Pop music show.

Option 4: University Festivals (The Real Insider Tip)

This is still the best-kept secret. In May (Spring) and October (Fall), universities in Seoul host massive, multi-day festivals.

  • Why it’s great: They book huge K-Pop artists (like IVE, aespa, Zico) to perform. The concerts are outdoors, the energy is insane, and they are often free (or very cheap) for the public.
  • How to Go: In late April or September, search on Naver/Twitter for “[University Name] + 축제 라인업” (e.g.,”Hongik university 축제 라인업”). Find the schedule and just show up! Get there early to get a good spot.

Theme 6. Enchant Seoul Trip with your own k-pop experience

The Ultimate Local Experience: “Coin Noraebang” (Coin Karaoke)

[MUST-DO EXPERIENCE]

You’ve seen your idols do it, now it’s your turn. A “Coin Noraebang” (Coin Karaoke) is a small, private karaoke booth where you pay per song. It’s incredibly cheap (usually ₩1,000 for 2 songs) and the perfect way to sing your heart out to your favorite K-Pop tracks.

  • How to Find One: They are everywhere, especially in Hongdae, Sinchon, and Gangnam. Look for bright signs that say “코인노래방” or “COIN KARAOKE”.

How to Find K-Pop Songs (The Foreigner’s “Pro-Tip”)

This is the hardest part for foreigners, but easy once you know the secret. The remote control will be entirely in Korean.

Do NOT use the giant songbook. Use your phone.

  1. Check the Brand: Look at the remote or TV screen. It will say TJ (태진) or KY (금영). (TJ is the most common).
  2. Search on Your Phone: Open Google and search for:
    • [song title] TJ song number
    • Example: K-pop demon hunters golden TJ song number
    • Google will usually show the 5 or 6-digit number in the search results (e.g., 81219).
  3. Enter the Number: Type that number directly into the remote and press the “시작” (Start) button. To reserve it, press “예약” (Reserve).
